U16 Girls vs Leek/Longton (Staffordshire Cup)

Tough Day at Leek, but Step by Step the Progress Shows

Tough Day, Valuable Lessons

Tamworth U16 girls travelled to Leek this weekend for their latest Staffordshire Cup fixture, facing a well-organised and physical Leek & Longton side. Despite the final scoreline, there were plenty of positives to take away and clear signs of gradual improvement.

With several players still missing, the focus was once again on teamwork, communication, and building confidence in our own game.

Key Areas to Work On:
The game highlighted a few areas that continue to challenge us — and that the girls will keep working on in training:

1. Rucks – Too often we went in alone with little or no support, allowing Leek to dominate the breakdown.
2. Tackling – Some strong tackles were made, but more focus on full commitment to body contact will help.
3. Line Speed – We were too a bit slow off the line, giving the opposition time and space to build their attacks.
4. Focus – At times, the girls watched the play unfold before reacting, particularly around the ruck area.

These moments cost us territory and points, but they are all things we can fix with focus, energy, and communication.

Lost of Positives:
When the girls focussed, the difference was clear to see. Tamworth began to carry the ball with intent, breaking the defensive line and playing with greater confidence. Communication started to flow, and the teamwork began to shine through.

There were some excellent individual defensive performances, with players showing real determination and pride in their tackles. The highlight of the day came from Eloise, who powered over for Tamworth’s only try — a reward for her relentless work around the field.

Post-Match Reflections:
Yes, it was a tough day — but every game is another step forward. The girls are learning, improving, and starting to understand that encouragement and support for each other make all the difference.

Celebrating the small wins — a strong tackle, a good carry, a well-formed ruck — is how we grow together as a team. Progress doesn’t happen overnight, but it is happening.

Dames of the Game:
Forwards: Eloise – tireless effort throughout, made an incredible number of tackles, and scored Tamworth’s try. A true leader by example.

Backs: Willow – another strong performance, working hard in both attack and defence, showing consistency and determination every time she steps on the pitch.

Opposition’s Player of the Match: Stephanie – recognised by Leek for her skill, effort, and commitment.

Every match teaches us something new, and while this one was a tough battle, it’s another step in the right direction. Keep learning, keep believing, and keep supporting each other.
