U16 Girls vs Lichfield (Staffordshire Cup)

Richard Randolph19 Oct - 20:25

Bravery, Teamwork, and the Love of Rugby

Final Score: 0 - 50, Lichfield Winners
Venue: Tamworth RFC
Competition: Staffordshire Cup
Date: 19th October 2025

If one match could sum up what grassroots rugby is all about, this was it. Despite everything that came their way — poor weather, bad luck, and a short bench — our Tamworth girls showed incredible bravery, teamwork, and love for the game.

The conditions were tough, with heavy drizzle falling throughout, making handling and footing difficult for both sides. With nine players unavailable through injury, illness, or holidays, Tamworth fielded a bare 15 for the third consecutive weekend, while Lichfield arrived well-resourced with a full squad of 22.

The pre-match message was clear: compete for every ball, apply pressure in defence, and when in possession — play with confidence and intent.

A Tough Start:
The match began in unfortunate fashion, with two Tamworth players forced off through injury within the first few minutes. Two more followed before half time, leaving the team down to just 11 players. To their great credit, Lichfield matched numbers and continued the game 11-a-side in the spirit of rugby.

Tamworth struggled to apply enough pressure defensively in the opening half, giving Lichfield too much time and space to move the ball. Their offloading game was slick, and they used the width of the pitch well to score freely.
Tackling — usually a major strength for Tamworth — wasn’t quite at its usual high standard, and Lichfield took advantage.

The first half ended 0–50, ending the match with Lichfield taking the the win.

Rugby Wins:
Following consultation all parties agreed to procced in the form of a training and development session, Lichfield girls joining forces with the remaining Tamworth girls to get 15v15 back on.

The impact was immediate. With renewed energy and numbers, Tamworth found their shape again. The borrowed Lichfield girls slotted in seamlessly, showing fantastic sportsmanship and helping to lift the tempo of the game.

A more even contest, with both sides trading phases and showing determination in defence. Tamworth created several scoring opportunities but were declined due to a few rushed decisions and handling errors in the wet conditions.

Still, the girls fought on — and were rewarded with a well-earned try on the stroke of the final whistle. And as we like to say — in our book, last try wins!

Post-Match Reflections:
This was a day that reminded everyone why we love this sport. It wasn’t about the scoreline — it was about resilience, respect, and team spirit. The girls played through adversity with heart and courage, and every single one can be proud of their effort.

We wish the injured girls — Grace HP, Izzy, Eloise, and Isla — a speedy recovery, and we look forward to having them back on the pitch soon.

A massive thank you to Lichfield for their sportsmanship, especially for sharing players and ensuring the 'second half' could continue competitively. Today, rugby was the real winner.

Dames of the Game:
Forwards (Cameo appearance): Aaliyah – epitomised the day with a brave, hard-working performance. Made key tackles, carried well, and even stepped up to play hooker when the team needed her. A true team player showing heart and adaptability.

Backs: Willow – showed courage and determination throughout, carrying hard, breaking tackles, and playing out of position without hesitation. Battled on bravely after a couple of painful knocks.

Special Mention: Grace Cook – everywhere on the pitch today. Tireless, adaptable, and full of heart.

An incredibly proud day for Tamworth U16s — a performance full of grit, unity, and love for the game. Well done, girls.
