Tamworth 48 Longton 7

Tamworth welcomed Longton to Wiggington Park on Saturday for the opening league fixture of the 22/23 season having been to say the least disrupted in their build up with the sudden and suprise departure of their Head coach Nigel Hall with the New Zealander taking up a new role at Loughborough University.
But they did not stay leaderless for long with Tom Franks taking up the reigns as head coach for the second time it was very much business as usual as they set about improving on last season’s indifferent start.
Tamworth started well and took the lead on 8 minutes when a speculative kick was fumbled by the Longton fullback the first to react was his opposite number Jay Rosenbach pouncing on the loose ball to dive over. Skipper Danny Norton added the extra 2 to put the hosts in early control.
They doubled their advantage 8 minutes later when Second Row Liam McGreevy broke clear of the Longton defence with a barnstorming run. He unselfishly found winger Jimmy Carroll outside him and he slid in for a nice try. Nortons boot was again accurate and Tamworth led 14-0
Norton extended the lead with a penalty before another Norton this time his brother Leighton scored Tamworth’s third try after some excellent work from his centre partner Liam Saayman. The extra two points were duly dispatched and Tamworth we’re well in control.
Things got even better for Tamworth when Rosenbach got his second and Tamworth’s all important bonus point score Norton made the kick look easy 31-0
Longton would score the next try as Tamworth were reduced to 14 players they found some room on the outside to score a converted try.
HT 31-7
Tamworth made a couple of changes at the break but this didn’t seem to disrupt anything as it was one of the replacements Martin Dearne that would score the next try with pretty much his first touch charging over powerfully Sid Wood taking over kicking duties from Norton added the conversion to make the score 38-7
Tamworth could have been excused if they had taken their foot off the gas with the game well won but they did no such thing with Rosenbach capping a man of the match performance with not only his hat trick try but also his fourth piling misery on the visitors.
All in all a very satisfactory first outing of the season against a side that won both fixtures last season and a great confidence boost going into next week’s long away trip to Herefordshire to face Luctonians 2s
