Tamworth 34 Wolverhampton 5

With a week of torrential rain turning the Wiggington Park going from soft to heavy an early morning pitch inspection was needed to see if Saturday’s game against Wolverhampton could actually go ahead. With the First team pitch being deemed unplayable due to standing water the game was switched to an adjoining pitch which seemed to have fared much better.
With Tamworth enjoying a terrific start to the season the visitors had not had the best of starts still looking for their first win.
Tamworth started brightly pinning Wolverhampton in their own half and took the lead after eight minutes Danny Norton slotting a penalty.
Jimmy Carroll extended the hosts lead ten minutes later finishing a slick move with the ball being whipped through the backs finding Carroll out wide to dive in at the corner. Norton added the extras 10-0
Tamworth’s next try was more grunt than grace as Wolverhampton appeared initially to have dealt with a five metre lineout by sacking the jumper it was left to Lock Liam McGreevy to power towards the line staying in the fight until his fellow forwards arrived in support to help drive him over. The Norton conversion was good and Tamworth led 17-0
Norton kept the scoreboard rolling with another penalty before Macauley Green scored Tamworth’s third try of the day running a great line off the back of a ruck to cross under the posts to give Norton the easiest of conversions and as the teams went into the break it was the hosts who had a commanding 27-0 lead.
The second half became a much scrappier affair as the visitors looked to stop the flow of points and Tamworth were probably trying a little too hard in search of the four try bonus point along with the pitch turning muddier by the minute the good flowing rugby that was on offer in the first period was now in short supply.
The bonus point would eventually come Tamworth’s way just after the hour mark Liam Saayman finally breaching the visiting defence. Soon followed by a consolation try for Wolverhampton to make the final score 34-5 to Tamworth in a game that won’t ever be described as a classic but one that Tamworth had to dig in and get the job done. They have a rest week next week before travelling to Newark on November 4th.
