Newark 17 Tamworth 0

Tamworth made the trip to Newark on Saturday missing some key players due to injury or unavailability. With scrum half Xavier Hill out following a hand injury sustained in the previous game former skipper John Borthwick came out of retirement to start in that slot. The game also saw a first team debut for third team captain James Ellison promoted up the ranks into the fullback shirt.
The game got underway on a surface that was in surprisingly good fettle as it had been under several feet of flood water just two weeks previously with the home side edging the physical opening exchanges forcing Tamworth onto the back foot and making the Tamworth physio also making her first team debut the busiest person out there with Tamworth casualties littering the park. One such casualty saw influential half back Danny Norton leave the field with a groin injury.
Newark continued their early dominance and took the lead after ten minutes with the games first try as an extended period of pressure saw them finally breach the visiting defence the conversion was added and the hosts led 7-0.
Their lead was doubled a couple of minutes later when they worked the ball wide the winger sliding in to score and Tamworth were looking decidedly shell shocked 14-0
Tamworth did come into the game after this piling pressure on the home defence but it held firm and they could make no inroads on the scoreboard.
It was in fact the home side who would extend their lead with a penalty just before the break to give them a deserved 17-0 half time lead.
Tamworth came into the game more in the second period as Borthwick and youngster Paddy Cole did their best to get them on the front foot despite the often rugged attention of the home side and the pack asking questions of their opposite numbers. But as the conditions and the playing surface inevitably deteriorated it became a half littered with handling errors from both sides neither of which could make any further additions to the scoreboard and Newark took the points from a scruffy game in which their early dominance paid dividends.
Tamworth have a week to lick their wounds and repair some bodies before facing second placed Long Eaton at home on Saturday
Final Score
Newark. 17
Tamworth. 0
