After the successes of last season which saw them finish sixth in their inaugural year at Level 6 a player exodus over the summer meant it was a very different look to the side that took the field to face Dronfield in the opening match of the season as the club looked to plug the gaps left by at least six nailed on starters from last year that are no longer available for various reasons.
Their opponents were an unknown entity to Tamworth having played at level 6 for some time but moving across from a Yorkshire league.
From the off it looked like being a bit of a baptism of fire for the new look side as they struggled to find any cohesion against a well drilled and physical opposition with the scrum coming under pressure giving away a string of penalties.
Tamworth soon fell behind as their solid defence that was last year’s trademark let them down as Dronfield breezed over for the first of five first half tries that seemed all too easy for the visitors with Tamworth struggling to get their hands on the ball and when they did they coughed it up far too cheaply.
The second period did see some improvement although Dronfield still managed to run in five more try’s they were made to work a little harder for them.
Although on the wrong end of what can only be described as a drubbing there were some good personal performances from the Tamworth side but personal performances don’t win games unfortunately unless they can find a way of gelling it promises to be a very difficult long season.
