Second Half Collapse Sinks Tamworth

Second Half Collapse Sinks Tamworth

Lea Mcgreevy28 Oct 2024 - 11:19

Tamworth 17 Matlock 44

Matlock were the visitors to Wiggington park on Saturday as Tamworth looked to ease the pressure they have placed themselves under with what can only be described as a less than ideal start to the season with just a solitary win keeping them firmly in the relegation zone.
Tamworth handed a first start to Cyrran Hini at fly half after flying in from New Zealand last week with youngster Harrison Wyatt also making his first team debut after impressing for the second team in past weeks.
Tamworth got off to probably their best start of the season so far as they took the game to Matlock looking sharp with Hini’s boot putting them into the right areas of the field. Matlock defended strongly if not always quite legally conceding a couple of early penalties Jack Dalton continued with kicking duties from the tee slotting one of them to give Tamworth a narrow advantage.
That advantage didn’t last too long as Matlock piled pressure on the Tamworth line and although they defended stoutly Matlock were patient and eventually wore the hosts down to score a nice try.3-5
Tamworth rallied from this set back to score next as the forwards knocked on Matlock’s door forcing them to commit more and more defenders to keep them out when they whipped the ball wide for another youngster Olly Cole to finish well in the corner. Dalton added the extra’s and Tamworth were back in the lead 10-5.
Again the lead wouldn’t last as Matlock pounced on a Tamworth handling error to level the scores at the half way mark 10-10.
It was at this point that the wheels properly came off for Tamworth as Matlock came out for the second half firing on all cylinders combined with the suspect defending that Tamworth have been guilty of all season rearing its ugly head again they ran in four unanswered tries in fifteen disastrous minutes for the home side making an already difficult ask almost impossible as Matlock revelled in the breathing space they had created on the scoreboard keeping Tamworth at arm’s length scoring a further two tries either side of a Jacob Te Rangi effort with the extra two points added by Dalton giving him a 100% day with the boot.
Matlock ran out worthy winners by 44 points to 17 another tough result to take for the host’s considering the closeness of the game at half time.
They have a week off this week before visiting newly promoted Ilkeston on November 9th
