Tamworth 36 Old Saltleians 14

Tamworth hosted Old Saltleians at Wiggington Park on Saturday hoping to continue the form that saw them take a bonus point win at Newcastle last time out.
Tamworth were forced into some late changes to their squad due to injury and unforeseen unavailability. This showed in the opening exchanges as the hosts struggled to settle and it was the visitors who shaded this period although they didn’t convert their possession into points.
Tamworth opened the scoring against the run of play as their defence continued to frustrate Old Salts. Scrum Half Sid Wood spotted a gap and promptly burst through his pace carrying him to the line for him to score his third in three games. Danny Norton converted and Tamworth led (7-0)
Salts came straight back and levelled with a converted try from close range (7-7)
Tamworth got a bit of breathing space on the scoreboard as an excellent individual try from winger Matty Archer and a fine move from a lineout saw Callum Render cross. Norton converted to give Tamworth a 19-7 lead going into the break.
Half time saw the introduction of club captain Macauley Green for his first appearance after a long injury lay off. Hooker Jarred Marsh had to leave the field for a head injury assessment which he subsequently failed forcing yet more rearrangement in the Tamworth ranks before the second period got underway.
The changes didn’t seem to knock Tamworth off their stride as they continued to enforce their dominance on the scoreboard with a deft chip over the top from Norton which was chased down by teenage Fullback Jay Rosenbach who was having an excellent game to score his first senior try (24-7)
This was quickly followed by a try straight off the training paddock backs and forwards combining to get the ball to the wing where Archers pace did the rest for him to get his second of the day and Tamworth’s bonus point score (29-7)
To their credit Salts kept plugging away and to be honest were much better value than the scoreboard suggested and they would get their second try again from close range as they finally breached Tamworth’s tight defence (29-14)
It would be the home side though that would close out the game Lock Liam McGreevy rounding off a Man of the Match performance by breaking clear to score under the posts. Norton added the extra’s and Tamworth had run out worthy winners (36-14)
Head coach Nigel Hall said after the game. Obviously I’m pleased with the win. We didn’t start well but held on and grew into the game and pushed on from there we scored six try’s today which were all good structured try’s and came from the work we do at training in the week. Our injury list is growing ever longer which is a worry Macca (Green) came through forty minutes well today but we don’t want to rush things with him but it was great to have him back. I’m confident that we have the strength in depth within the squad to get through this mini injury crisis and have a decent run in the remaining games.
