Tamworth travelled to the Engineers, a youthful University side with a patch work team. Due to injuries and unavailability's, captain Olly Tomson had to shuffle the cards, including playing himself out of position from Prop to Hooker.
Engineers started at a blistering pace and quickly found themselves 10-0 up within 5 minutes, beating Tamworth for pace on the outside for both tries. Tomson called for calm heads and just get hands on the ball to build a few phases. Tamworth did just that and started to find a rhythm and structure, slowly pegging engineers back in their own half where flanker Aidan McLaren exposed space on the fringe of a ruck to break the gain line and touch down for a well worked try. At last, Tamworth were back in the game.
Engineers once again tried to breach a strong Tamworth defensive line, but were getting no joy through the middle. Engineers, did touch down twice more, each time Tamworth forcing them to take the long route and beat Tamworth for pace around the outside, making the score 20-5.
Tamworth refused to admit defeat and kept to a simple pick and go structure, exposing the soft fringes of the engineers. Building the phases and sucking the engineers defenders in, fullback Matt Robinson found himself with time and space out wide, beating 3 with a strong weaving run to cross the line, finishing off a well worked team try with some individual brilliance, making the score 20-10 at half time.
Tamworth were once again forced on the back foot by a blitz start to the 2nd half by the engineers, but again they found no way through and had to resort to scoring 2 quick tries on the outside once again making the score 32-10.
Tamworth finally had a spell of dominance in the 2nd half, using a mixture of a strong forward carrying game, and a midfield wrecking ball masterclass from inside centre Sam Smallwood, constantly punching holes in the engineers defensive line, earned him the man of the match award.
Wave after wave, attack after attack, nether Tamworth or Birmingham engineers could find a break through in what was a physically intense encounter, with the game ending 32-10 to the engineers.
Tamworth captain, Olly Tomson after the game said "I was proud of the boys determination and tenacity. To not roll over after a quick start by the engineers was a true testament to the team that we do belong at this level. With our performances so far we have turned a few heads, and today was another head turner for the right reasons, despite the result. We made it hard work for them, forcing them on the outside every time, they had no change out of us through the middle. 1 to 15 everyone put in an absolute shift"
