A wet and muddy pitch, powerful winds and two opposing teams makes for an interesting game of rugby. On Sunday 21st January, the Tamworth under 18 girls played a combination team consisting of Burton and Leek/Longton. The final score was 67-0 to Tamworth before the teams traded some players to have a different style of game.
For the opening exchanges, the teams seemed evenly matched with equal opportunities for turnovers, ground-making runs and play. However, once Tamworth managed to pull forward a little, they gained speed and confidence with their lead over the opposition, it was easier to keep building off of it. Tries in the first half came from Ellie, Becky, Lucie, Brogan (2), Grace, Millie and Angelina with her first ever try. From this, Brogan managed to score four of the conversions.
Three more tries were scored in the second half that counted towards the final score. Grace had the first one, followed by Angelina and Libby. Two of the three possible conversions were completed by Brogan. The scoring stopped here and some players from each team were exchanged but credit must be given to the tries scored by Lucie (2), Ellie, Grace and one from an initial opposition player.
Becky and Angelina were awarded dames of the game; Becky for her control over the backline’s pressure on the opposition and the organisation in attack, and Angelina for her increased confidence in attack and defence, even scoring her first two tries.
